Using NexSan SATABoy / SATABeast with VMware ESX server
Using NexSan SATABoy / SATABeast with VMware ESX server
Solution
VMware ESX server is fully supported by NexSan , and works perfectly over iSCSI and Fibre.
A couple of things to point out;
1. ESX 3.5 (currently) maximum addressable LUN size limitation is currently 2TB. So when create your volume(s) on the SATABoy or SATABeast make sure the volume is no larger than 2TB.
2. When using iSCSI - enable / configure iSCSI as per the ESX SAN configuration guide. **NOTE** ESX server 3.5 does not automatically open the correct port on the inbuilt firewall, so the LUN on the NexSan may not be visible and there will be no events logged anywhere.
On the ESX Server host, go to Configuration, Security Profile, Properties and select the appropriate iSCSI interface tick box.
Rescan the Storage Adapter and the NexSan LUN should be visible.
*Note* This guide relates to ESX 3 and 3.5 only. Check with VMware for latest spec info.
